What Is The Makeup of a Confident Woman?

When I was in my teens and 20s, I rarely wore makeup. Unless it was a special event, such as my wedding day, I was fortunate that I didn’t need it. Plus, I knew enough to know that I didn’t have the skills to apply makeup properly and I had no interest in learning them, so I didn’t bother.

But as I’ve gotten older, my skin has lost that youthful glow. While overall it’s in good condition, it’s gotten blotchy, my eyes seem smaller, and my lips are thinner. Welcome to your 40s.

So makeup has become more of a necessity for me to feel good about myself when I leave the house. I feel more confident when I take the time to apply makeup.

Well, Trish McEvoy is the author of The Makeup of a Confident Woman and her mission is to help women exude confidence, and makeup is the tool Trish uses.

"Everyone of us needs something to help us sail through the day and make it better. Makeup has been that instrument for me and it can be yours, too."

Her belief is that when you feel confident about how you look, that confidence will show in your body language, your attitude, and your mood. Others will be able to perceive it.

“No sooner do you love what you see in your face in the mirror than your entire mentality changes and suddenly you’re practicing other habits that culminate in a better, more beautiful you.”

She acknowledges that some women don’t want to bother with makeup or feel they don’t need it.

“What does feeling your best mean? Maybe you wouldn’t ordinarily include makeup in that definition, but I’m asking you right now to challenge yourself. Invest the time to put on your makeup using my system and see what happens.”

McEvoy starts the instructive part of the book by going over the basics of skincare and the tools you need to apply makeup with skill.

Next, she asks you to identify your Beauty ID.

  • Level 1 is someone who uses few products, spends minimal time on makeup, and even skips makeup altogether some days. This is me.

  • Level 2 is someone who won’t leave the house without makeup and feels that makeup enhances and defines their look.

  • Level 3 is someone for whom makeup is a creative outlet. They enjoy playing with makeup, experimenting with new looks, and they own a lot of makeup products.

You may be at different levels at different times in your life but overall, there is likely one with which you most identify.

Then she gets to the tutorials.

There are 8 steps to each level of makeup but obviously, you don’t have to go through all 8 steps. You may not need them.

1. Brighten and Prime Upper Eyes
2. Eyeliner and Color
3. Lash Enhancement
4. Under Eyes
5. Even Skin
6. Face Color
7. Brown Enhancement
8. Lip Enhancement 

There are six women of varying ages and ethnicities that she takes through all eight steps. It starts with a before and after picture of the model. Then McEvoy does a Level One look (the minimal look) and walks you through all eight steps. Next, on the same women, she does a Level 2 look, again with the eight steps. Finally, same woman, a Level 3 look, and all eight steps. 

After those extensive tutorials, there are an additional six models that she uses to address specific beauty concerns that you can correct with makeup, such as uneven lips, thin lashes or drooping eyelids.

That section was most interesting to me because McEvoy used one particular model, Valerie, who was in McEvoy’s first book when Valerie was 20. Then we get to see Valerie again in this book at age 30 and McEvoy explains how Valerie’s look has changed and so her makeup needs change as well. 

The photography throughout the book is well-done and it’s easy to see how the makeup is being applied so you can use the same technique on yourself. 

What did I learn?

My eyes tend to be dark so learning how to brighten the eye area (page 66) and create that Triangle of Light (page 134) has been super helpful. (Not that I make use of it every day—remember I’m a Level One kind of girl.) Right now, I’m experimenting with different under-eye makeup products and brands. (Any suggestions?)

I also learned how to create a fuller lash line by using a gel liner at the base of my lashes (page 87). This has been my favorite tip and one I put into practice just about every day that I wear makeup.

How To Be Confident When Grocery Shopping For Your Family

“Wouldn’t it be great if you had a trusted field guide who could take you by the hand and walk you through every aisle of the grocery store, explain the health benefits and concerns of each food group, and then offer tips for selecting the best, most nutritious variety of each?”

How to feed your family real food and be confident about it

Feeding our families is tricky business today. As I sit here writing this, I’m overwhelmed. What questions should I highlight in this piece? 

“Is it better to buy organic or local?”
“What foods are on the dirty dozen list again?”
“Should we buy cage-free or grass-fed?”
“The packaging looks 'green' and healthy, and it says it’s 'made with natural ingredients,' but it uses partially hydrogenated oils—didn’t I read that those are unhealthy?”
“This product says it’s organic, but it has 23 grams of sugar in it—that can’t be good, right?”
“Or,” and this is a big one in our house, “how do we store these very expensive organic blueberries? Last time they spoiled so quickly.” 

The Real Food Grocery Guide isn’t going to answer every possible question, but it will give you a solid base of information so you can be confident about what you’re feeding your family.

The author, Maria Marlowe, is a certified integrative nutrition health coach who wrote The Real Food Grocery Guide to “serve as the manual I wish I had when I was making the switch to real, nourishing foods that support health—the stuff our bodies were actually designed to eat in the first place.”

Here are three areas that I found most beneficial.

1. The section on produce has been a game-changer for me and is the reason I decided to buy this book. I read an advanced digital copy last summer via NetGalley, and when I got to the produce section, I knew I had to own a hard copy of this book. My daughter loves fruits and vegetables and is always willing to experiment with new foods. But we’ll often stand in the produce section with puzzlement. If we want to buy papaya, what do we look for? Well, Marlowe tells us to look at the color. It should be mostly yellow or orange-yellow. The body should have a slight give, but the neck should be firm. Brown spots on the skin won’t affect the flavor. She also tells us the most nutritious varieties to purchase, how to store it (properly storing produce is a big money-saver), and even how to cut it up and eat it.

2. Buying fresh food and eating healthy can feel expensive. Marlowe offers many ideas for saving money while shopping for healthy foods. Two online options that were new to me were thrivemarket.com and nuts.com.

3. Oils—Cooking with oils has befuddled me for years. (Please don’t laugh—I really don’t enjoy cooking.) I know that vegetable oil is bad for you and olive oil is good for you. But you can’t cook with olive oil because it has a low smoke point. (What is a smoke point anyway?) Marlowe answers that question and walks you through all the different kinds of oils, what to use when, and what phraseology to look for on the label.

4. The last section that I think is super helpful is the chapter on packaged foods. In this chapter, Marlowe defines the buzzwords that often show up on the packaging. What do labels such as Fair Trade, Local, and Natural mean and how does it affect the food we’re buying?

She also explains why it’s better to read the ingredients list when you are deciding if a food meets your standards for healthy eating. She also includes a large graphic of a Nutrition Facts panel that breaks down what all the sections mean.

I purchased the physical copy of The Real Food Grocery Guide because I love physical books, but it might be better to own the ebook version. Then you can pull it up on your phone when you are standing in the grocery store trying to remember what fresh okra should look like.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know how much I love my Day Designer planner. I talk about it all. the. time. They probably get sick of me tagging them. But the format of the Day Designer has been so beneficial to me.  It helps me keep my priorities straight, so I want to share the love.

I’ll be honest; I’ve experimented with other daily planners. But I always come back to the Day Designer. And the reason I do so is because of this Top Three section.

This area helps me in two ways. First, it forces me to pick, out of all the things I might want to accomplish in any given day, the three most important ones. These are the things that are going to make the most difference in my life. For example, it’s not likely that I’m ever going to put “Sweep the floors” in that Top Three section. While I love having freshly swept floors, the kind that feels good under bare feet, an activity like that isn’t going to move me from where I am today to where I want to be in the future. 

Secondly, the Top Three has its own section from all the other To Dos that might end up on my list, like sweeping the floor. The Top Three is right at the top of the page. I can’t miss it. And because the Top Three is separate from all the other tasks, I know what the Most Important Tasks are so I’m going to get those done first before I tackle the other things on my To Do list. 

Having the Top Three has made a massive difference in my productivity levels. There are some days I don’t use my planner. And I still get stuff done. It’s just not the important stuff. It’s not the activities that are going to make a big difference in my life or my family’s life. 

But when I plan, with intention, the Top Three things, those are the days that I really build momentum and move the needle forward on my goals.

I also appreciate having the 4 D boxes, as I call them—Due, Dinner, Dollars, and Don’t Forget. I don’t often use them, myself, but I think it’s great to have the ability to track all these things in one place. It’s also a neat feature for memory keeping. Depending on what you put in the boxes, you can look back on your meals, your workouts, your spending habits, writing habits, reading habits, really any habit you want to track in the Don’t Forget box. 

The other thing I love about the Day Designer is the classic, sophisticated black and white aesthetic of the page design. It’s clean and elegant. There’s a place for everything you might want to make a note of and there’s even a reminder to practice gratitude. 

Because I am such a fan of the Day Designer, and because I own all the daily options, I thought it would be helpful to you if I wrote a post about them. There are a few layout options across the daily planners, so hopefully, this will help you decide which layout might work best for you.

Day Designer Ultimate Daily Planner Review

First up is the original Day Designer daily planner layout. The mini is 6.25 x 8.3 inches. The Flagship edition is the largest of all the options at 9 x 9.75 inches.  They have the same page layout with just a few minor differences. These planners are available at daydesigner.com. There are different cover options to choose from.

Both of these planners have an inspirational or motivational quote. They have the Top Three area and the 4 D boxes. Due, Dinner, Dollars, and Don’t Forget. At the bottom of the page, both sizes have a Notes section and a Gratitude section.

Where these two layouts differ is in the hourly schedule. The Flagship, which is the larger size, runs from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm. The mini runs from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. 

Note: The other thing I appreciate about the DD is the amount of writing space between the lines. I tend to write on the large side, so I enjoy having plenty of white space in which to write. There is roughly 5/16 inch or 8mm between the lines. It's the perfect size.

In these planners, Saturday and Sunday share a page. Because I run on a typical Monday-Friday schedule, this works for me. My weekends usually don’t have activities tied to a specific time, so I ignore the hourly schedule on the weekends and use the lines to make a To Do list. If individual weekend pages are a deal-breaker for you, you might want to look at Day Designer’s A5 planning page.

The next daily layout option, also available from daydesigner.com is the A5 ring-bound inserts.

Again, this page has the Top Three spot. But instead of the 4 D boxes, there are five lines, with symbols, for Workout/Health, Dinner, Due, Dollars, and Don’t Forget.  This layout does not have the inspirational/motivational quote at the top.

At the bottom, you still have a Notes and Gratitude section, but you also have a place to track your water and food intake. 

The hourly schedule on the A5 planner page runs from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.  The lines are about 6mm apart or roughly, 1/4 inch.

Undated pages come with the starter pack, but you can purchase dated pages in the Day Designer shop if you prefer.  And Saturday and Sunday are on separate pages.

Now we come to the line of daily planners that are part of the Day Designer for Blue Sky collaboration. If you like a little pop of color in your planner, this line might be your thing. 

There are two size options. One is 5 x 8, and the other is 8 x 10.

First is the smaller 5 x 8. You’ve got the Top Three, and an hourly schedule that runs from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm, the To-do list, a Gratitude box. Instead of a notes section, there’s a box called Tonight. You could use that for dinner, general evening plans, something to look forward to, or events that take place after 8:00 pm. The weekend layout combines Saturday and Sunday on one page. And instead of a Top Three, it has an area for you to list with intention three things you look forward to doing. Don’t forget to plan a little fun in your weekend.

Last up is the 8 x 10 edition. This layout is a bit different from the smaller one.

It’s a 3-column format. The entire left column is the daily schedule running from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm BUT with 1/2 hours increments. Some people will like being able to plan in smaller increments than one hour so if that’s you, here’s your answer. 

The second column is the Top Three followed by a To Do list underneath, and the Tonight box at the bottom.

The 3rd column is the quote, followed by a substantial Notes section and underneath that, the Gratitude box. 

And because I’m super geeky like that, I also measured the space between the lines in the Day Designer for Blue Sky planners. Both editions give you roughly 6-7 mm or about 1/4 inch of writing space. 

The Day Designer for Blue Sky planners are available at Blue Sky, Target, Office Max, Staples, and Amazon. There are different cover options as well as different color interiors but the layout is the same.

The one I use most is the Day Designer mini. I do love the classic black and white design. The Flagship is a bit big and bulky for my taste. 

But I also really like the planners from the Blue Sky line. Sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of color on your planner pages. So I have a hard time picking a favorite; that’s how I come to own multiple daily planners each year.

Each chapter touches on a different topic beginning with what it means to be a gentleman. Then Kelvin moves into being confident, being comfortable with how your body looks, and taking care of your mental health. He talks about being a good friend and a good date, the importance of body language and good social behavior, appropriate attire, and how to act in the workplace. He touches on marriage, fatherhood, time management and money. 

Following each chapter are a few shots of Kelvin modeling various outfits with captions that talk about having a positive body image.

What I love, love, love about the book is how positive Kelvin is! His core message to our sons is to always be kind. Think about others. Strive to be a better person. Be kind. Be kind. Be kind. My favorite sentence from the book almost brings me to tears because it is such a beautiful, hopeful light in a world that can be so ugly. Kelvin says, “Day by day, if we continue to build each other up with love and random acts of kindness, we will make this world a more amazing place.” 

Book Review: Notoriously Dapper || One Book Blog

You’ve got a couple options with this book. It is written directly to young men so you could purchase Notoriously Dapper and give it to your son to read. Just be aware that the book does contain some language and touches on topics such as infidelity so you might want to flip through the book before handing it over to your son.

But better yet, don’t give it to your son to read by himself. Read it with him. The chapters are short enough that you could read a chapter a day or over a couple of days. Then talk about the topics as much or as little as your son wants. Some chapters, such as marriage, may not be immediately applicable to him but it will give him something to think about, and hopefully set a positive mental image in his mind. And reading Notoriously Dapper together will give you and your son(s) an opportunity to have some great conversations about topics that might not otherwise come up.

Book Review: The Wellness Project

The Wellness Project: How I Learned to Do Right by My Body, Without Giving Up My Life

We all know there are things we could be doing to take care of ourselves, but deciding where to start is overwhelming. Diet? Exercise? Vitamins? Minerals? Green skincare? Clean makeup? Natural? Vegan? Organic? High carb? Low fat? High fat? No carb? What’s a woman to do?

Well, you can read The Wellness Project by Phoebe Lapine, cookbook author and food blogger, as she seeks to take control of her health without making herself crazy.

As she approached the age of 30 (don’t worry, age is not a factor in this journey), Lapine was trying to find the root cause of her skin flareups. Her doctor suggested an “underlying imbalance” but “had zero interest in helping [her] figure out how to right it.” So Lapine went about it on her own, talking with and asking questions of experts like yogis, aestheticians, nutritionists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, etc. One question she asked all the experts was, “If you could tell someone to make just one lifestyle change that would have a profound effect on their general well-being, what would it be?” 

Lapine took those answers and designed for herself a series of challenges to “overhaul” her health. The goal was to create a wellness plan that was sustainable—no wacky diets or exercise plans that couldn’t be maintained over the long-term. She shared some of the details on her blog, Feed Me Phoebe, and from that, The Wellness Project—the book— was born. 

There are 11 chapters covering things such as detoxing from sugar, caffeine, & alcohol, using green beauty products, cooking and eating whole foods, sleep, exercise, self-care and more. Each chapter wraps up with a tips section and two recipes.

The Wellness Project is worth your time if you're looking for ways to improve your health. It also serves as a reminder that medical professionals don’t have all the answers or even the right answers. (Lapine’s initial doctor was willing to continue prescribing antibiotics for Lapine’s skin condition even though the antibiotics weren’t clearing up her skin.) We have to be proactive about our own health and the health of our families. Reading books like The Wellness Project gives us the inspiration and motivation to keep trying new things, to listen to our bodies and discover what we need to be healthy.

The starter pack inserts come with the purchase of an A5 binder. But if you already have an A5 planner that you love, you do have the option of purchasing an individual starter pack. There are two starter pack options. One pack has blue and green tabbed dividers. The other pack comes with dividers that are shades of red and pink.

Here are all three pages laid out together. The largest is from the flagship planner. The middle one is from the mini planner. And the page on top is the A5 daily page. You can see there is not much difference between the size of the mini planner page and the A5 planner page.

The other difference between the planner pages is the weight of the paper. The A5 insert paper is thicker than the Flagship & Mini paper. The A5 paper is 120 gsm and the Flagship and mini paper is 90 gsm. If you are curious about paper weights (as in lbs and gsm), this is my go-to page for comparisons.

I love how the A5 is so customizable. While you could use it as laid out above, there are a few other insert options available for the A5 Luxe planners. Planner Review: Day Designer—The Mini

Day Designer Daily Mini, the A5 Luxe Binder, and the Daily Flagship.

While I began the year with the Day Designer flagship, I began using the academic version of the mini daily planner in early September. The layout of the mini is just about identical to the flagship; it's just a smaller size. If you want a daily planner to carry around with you, the mini will be more portable than the flagship.

As far as page layout goes, this is one of the small differences I noticed between the mini and the flagship. The is the yearly overview calendar for the mini. It is not a two page spread like in the flagship.

The daily page has all the same sections as the flagship. The only difference is that the hourly column begins at 7:00 am and ends at 7:00 pm.

The Top Three and the 4 D's (Due, Dinner, Dollars, & Don't Forget) are part of the mini page layout. If you missed my previous post about the flagship planner, I love the Top Three. It is *the* reason why I keep coming back to the Day Designer planners. Having a Top Three forces me to prioritize what gets done. It forces me to stop and think, "If nothing else gets done, what are the three things that will make the biggest difference?"

The picture below shows the size difference between the two planners. According to the Day Designer site, the flagship (on the bottom) is 9" wide by 9.75" tall. The mini planner (on the top) is 6.625" tall by 8.3" tall.

And the picture below gives you an idea of how the daily planner pages themselves compare. The flagship is on the bottom. The mini page is on the top. Pulling from the Day Designer site, the flagship page is 7.3" wide by 9.5" tall . The mini page is 6" wide by 8.125" tall. I have always used the flagship size and was happy with it, because I don't carry my daily planner with me. But now that I have tried the mini, I think that is the size I will purchase in the future. It takes up less room on my desk, plus it's just a more comfortable size.

Additional comparisons—In the flagship planner, the hours run from 5:00 am-9:00 pm. In the mini, the hours are 7:00 am-7:00 pm. There are 17 lines in the To Do section of the flagship. There are 13 lines in the To Do section of the mini. In both planners the lines in the Top Three, the hourly schedule, and the To Do list are 8mm apart. (Which is plenty of room if you like to write big like me!) If you think of any questions, let me know and I will do my best to answer them.
