Notoriously Dapper: How to Be a Modern Gentleman with Manners, Style, and Body Confidence by Kelvin Davis

Kelvin Davis is a father, husband, teacher, model, author, and Instagram influencer. It is important to him that young men growing up today have the confidence to be modern-day gentlemen.

Each chapter touches on a different topic beginning with what it means to be a gentleman. Then Kelvin moves into being confident, being comfortable with how your body looks, and taking care of your mental health. He talks about being a good friend and a good date, the importance of body language and good social behavior, appropriate attire, and how to act in the workplace. He touches on marriage, fatherhood, time management and money.

Following each chapter are a few shots of Kelvin modeling various outfits with captions that talk about having a positive body image.

What I love, love, love about the book is how positive Kelvin is! His core message to our sons is to always be kind. Think about others. Strive to be a better person. Be kind. Be kind. Be kind. My favorite sentence from the book almost brings me to tears because it is such a beautiful, hopeful light in a world that can be so ugly. Kelvin says, “Day by day, if we continue to build each other up with love and random acts of kindness, we will make this world a more amazing place.”

You’ve got a couple options with this book. It is written directly to young men so you could purchase Notoriously Dapper and give it to your son to read. Just be aware that the book does contain some language and touches on topics such as infidelity so you might want to flip through the book before handing it over to your son.

But better yet, don’t give it to your son to read by himself. Read it with him. The chapters are short enough that you could read a chapter a day or over a couple of days. Then talk about the topics as much or as little as your son wants. Some chapters, such as marriage, may not be immediately applicable to him but it will give him something to think about, and hopefully set a positive mental image in his mind. And reading Notoriously Dapper together will give you and your son(s) an opportunity to have some great conversations about topics that might not otherwise come up.

Notoriously Dapper is available at AmazonKobo, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, and IndieBound. You can find out more about Kelvin Davis here.

Book Review: How To Get Dressed

By: Alison Freer

Reader Problem: You want to learn how to dress like you have your very own wardrobe stylist.

Author Solution: How To Get Dressed by Alison Freer, a costume designer with years of experience making Hollywood actors look amazing.

Book Review: How To Get Dressed || One Book Blog

How To Get Dressed is a book that will help with all your clothing needs.

It begins with an intro and then there are 13 chapters that cover everything from finding your style, to how clothing should fit, what is worth altering, and how to find a good tailor, and how to care for the clothes that make you look and feel great. Freer also offers advice about shopping in vintage and thrift stores and even includes a chapter for men. She also shares a list of the tools she suggests we have at the ready in the event we ever have to deal with a wardrobe malfunction.

Along the way, she tells stories of how she dresses TV and movie actors and how she achieves the flawless look we mere mortals lust after. And Alison even learns a thing or two from them. There's an actor (no, she doesn't name names) who taught Alison how to use adhesive spray to prevent yellow underarm wetness stains on shirts.

Most useful chapter: Chapter 2. On fit. If an article of clothing fits well, then it's going to look great. "...when you find something that fits your body and performs the action you want it to, nobody notices whether it's technically 'in' or 'out'. They just think you look great—all the time..."

How To Get Dressed: A Costume Designer's Secrets for Making Your Clothes Look, Fit, and Feel Amazing is available at Amazon, on iBooks, on Kobo, and Nook.
